I often use bentonite clay to deep clean my hair. I love how soft and defined it leaves my hair. I usually mix own my clay mask, but I have been on the lookout for a ready-made mix that will allow me to skip the DIY step on wash days when I need to.
I was recently gifted a bottle of Detoxifying Clay Wash, one of the products that make up the Natural VIP line from Nature’s Beauty Mix. I was excited to try it.
About Nature’s Beauty Mix
Janeen Arshan, founder of Nature’s Beauty Mix and developer of the Natural VIP line of products, decided to start her company after experimenting with DIY products for her own use. She began to use plant oils and butters in place of store-bought products containing synthetic ingredients and found that her hair and skin flourished.
The Natural VIP line is free of silicones, parabens, and sulfates. The products are cruelty-free and non-GMO.
So, what’s in the Detoxifying Clay Wash?
This wash includes natural, nourishing ingredients such as aloe vera and olive oil. It also contains lavender and rosemary essential oils, known for soothing the skin and promoting growth.
Here’s the full ingredients list:
Bentonite Clay, Aloe Barbadenis Leaf Gel, Aloe Barbadenis Leaf Juice, Pyrus Malus (Apple) vinegar, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Lavandula Hybrida (Lavender) Oil, Rosemarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Oil, and Optiphen Plus
I love a short, straightforward ingredients list where I recognize all or most of what’s listed. This list fits the bill. Aside from the clay, aloe and oils, Optiphen Plus is a paraben-free preservative.
How much does it cost?
The product comes in a 10 oz bottle, on sale for $9.99 at the time of this writing.
How I used the Detoxifying Clay Wash
Bentonite clay is typically used to cleanse and remove buildup from hair. It also has conditioning properties and can define your coils. Here’s the description from the Nature’s Beauty Mix website:
Give your hair a break from harmful drying shampoo with this clay wash for natural hair. This clay wash will detox your hair and easily remove product build up without stripping hair encouraging natural hair oil production. It will leave your hair soft, with a natural shine and curl definition.
Janeen sent the following instructions along with the clay wash:
Apply to wet hair and leave on for 30 minutes, wash out clay with shampoo and a deep conditioner. Also, you can use a little on your face while you are waiting to wash out as a face mask.
I wet my hair thoroughly with warm water and shingled the clay wash through in sections as I always do, then let it sit for 30 minutes as directed. As with most clay-based products, the application was a bit messy. Put a towel around your shoulders and another on the floor for easier cleanup, or apply in the shower.
I rinsed the clay from my hair in the shower with warm water. To remove any remaining clay from my hair, I followed up with shampoo and conditioner.
Does it work?
Some naturals find bentonite clay drying, however, this clay wash felt really good on my hair and didn’t strip or dry it at all. When I rinsed, my hair felt soft. The aloe vera gel/juice and olive oil allow the clay to do its thing without stripping the hair. Of course, it’s always a good idea to follow up with a deep conditioner after deep cleaning your hair.
This product gave me the clean slate I’m going for when using clay washes. It does add an extra step to your routine if you use it the way I did, following up with shampoo and conditioner to remove all traces of the clay. This isn’t really a problem for me since I only do a deep clean once a month, but it is something to consider.
The final rinse
Overall, I enjoyed using the Natural VIP Detoxifying Clay Wash and would use it again. It’s a nice alternative to my DIY mix when I don’t have the time or desire to get out my measuring spoons, and it leaves my hair clean and soft.
