Vegan Soul Food Recipes for the Holidays

One thing that’s been fun since I started eating better, and especially since I went plant based, has been updating some of my favorite soul food recipes.

I take this very seriously and have made small changes to a few of my mom’s go to recipes each year, trying little by little to get them closer to the original.

As part of my research, I’m always looking up plant based and vegan soul food recipes.

In this roundup, I’m sharing some of the most delicious looking vegan soul food recipes I’ve found.

Vegan Collard Greens

I grew up eating vegetables flavored with neck bones and ham hocks. The exact flavor is hard to achieve without meat, but this vegan version comes close. The secret ingredient is smoked salt.

In my house, we always add smoked paprika and liquid smoke. I honestly find myself looking for the meat – for me, the flavor is that convincing.

Nut-Free Vegan Baked Macaroni and Cheese

This macaroni and cheese recipe uses dairy-free cheese. I don’t use dairy substitute products often, but once or twice a year it’s an easy way to make one of my childhood favorite dishes.

This recipe doesn’t contain nuts which is perfect if you or any of your guests are allergic or sensitive.

When I make vegan macaroni and cheese I like to use brown rice pasta so that it’s gluten-free as well. I love that this dish is baked in a cast iron skillet.

Vegan Sweet Potato Biscuits

Sweet Potato Soul is one of our go to cookbooks, and this southern style biscuit recipe is from the companion Youtube channel.

Growing up, my family often made Pillsbury Grands and Bisquick drop biscuits. I’ve always wanted to try making them from scratch and this recipe is perfect.
