Kavonna has been natural for just over three years. She transitioned to natural hair by snipping her relaxed, damaged ends after allowing her natural hair to grow out, eliminating the need to do a big chop. Read on to find out more about her journey.
How and why did you go natural?
My ends were damaged. I was doing twists in my hair, but without getting touch-ups, my hair was getting pretty thick and all over the place. I decided to cut the damaged hair but I didn’t do a big chop. My hair was shorter than ever, so I was stressing out for weeks because I was not used to my new look.
What is your current hair care routine?
Just water, oil, and some moisturizer. I like two strand twists and wash and go’s as well. I can put protective styles in and wrap my headscarf on my head. I get fabric at Wal-Mart; they have so many patterns and designs to choose from.
What is your favorite thing about being natural?
Just being able to try new styles and not caring if it’s neat or not. My hair is thick and I love it. I always color the top of my hair honey blonde because I absolutely love it and I always get so many compliments.
What are your favorite natural hair care resources?
MissKenK, JourneyToWaistLength, and Daye La Soul (I love her hair).
What would you want someone who is newly natural or considering going natural to know?
It’s a lot of work, but once you get into the swing of things you will be fine. It’s hair, it will grow back. You will learn yourself more and your hair will fall into place. It definitely saves money and waiting in a salon. Try different styles for short hair on YouTube. You won’t regret it at all and you can always add big earrings if you’re not feeling confident about your new hair. Earrings will distract attention from your short hair and focus more on your beauty.
